Settled in Salamanca

It’s been nearly three months since I wrote my last post..time flies when you’re settling. Between trying to sort a bank account, establishing an internet connection in my apartment (things take time here with the ‘mañana’ way of life)  entertaining back to back visitors and visiting Marbella in a bid to chase the last of the warm sun, November has arrived in the blink of an eye.

I wish I could say the image above was taken by me, but sadly my brand new HTC was stolen in a club. It contained so many images I took of beautiful sun-drenched scenery since my arrival here, not to mention the documentation of my road trip travels on the way here. Oh well, you win some, you lose some!

We live on the top of a hill, overlooking the city in a brand new apartment. Everything has really come together to make it our own. There are so many students from all over the world, beautiful restaurants, interesting tapas, cheap bars and even cheaper nightclubs that open until the sun comes up…if you make it to them that is, after spending your time barhopping in such a buzzing city.

There’s always something going on in the Plaza Mayor, a large open square (built in 1729) which is nestled in the heart of Salamanca, ‘The Golden City’, a title which came from the glow of the sandstone buildings. The square is home to ice cream parlours, bars and restaurants and is incredibly social. Everyday I see children running around, students sitting and chatting in the centre, beautifully dressed women and old men watching the crowds which they lean on their walking sticks, talking amongst each other.

And when the lights come on in the evening, you know it’s one of those things that will always stay with you. The feeling of being surrounded by incredible lights in the blink of an eye, the glow contrasting with the clear black sky and the sound of the soothing gasps of enchanted people floating through the arches will never get old.

I hope to learn a lot, do a lot and see as much as I can during my year here.

Has anyone else had the chance to visit Spain’s Golden City?
